In a bid to deepen the experiences, knowledge, and expertise gathered during the 1st and 2nd of the Virus Outbreak Data Network in Africa and Asia, the initiative has decided to document the contributions of FAIR data networks to the COVID-19 crisis response and learnings from the COVID-19 outbreak through a special issue of Data Intelligence on the FAIR Data Interoperability in COVID-19 themed Launching an international FAIR Data Network for COVID Data.

Special Issue will be published by Data Intelligence in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Sciences. This Issue provides an analysis of how the opportunity emerged to launch the FAIR data network during this pandemic through the lens of open data. It also presents analytical empirical perspectives across disciplines. The authors will present state-of-the-art research findings on the latest developments of the relevance of FAIR to society in this new context.

The topics identify critical issues of deployment and convergence across extremely different and often difficult, circumstances, identifying challenges on data generation and publishing, data sharing, and data analytics in the domain of observational.

The general list of topics for the abstract will focus on the following areas

  • Proof of concept and potential for further development and integration of FAIR deployment with observational patient data (section 1)
  • FAIR equivalency of Regulatory Frameworks (section 2)
  • Semantic interoperability, vocabularies, and metadata, Adoption potential of FAIR in health and across domains (section 3)
  • Training and curricula development (section 4)
  • The relevance of FAIR to the Sustainable Development Goals (section 5)
  • FAIR and the Freedom to Operate: The role of minimal open standards in driving convergence (CEDAR and Wizard creating VODAN-compatible RDF for the WHO eCRF)
  • Metadata for Machines Workshop Number 4: Configuring the VODAN FAIR Data Point (overview of the ongoing M4M)
  • VODAN in a Box (a semantic data model for the WHO eCRF and data capture tools)

The articles are expected to follow these requirements

  • Articles should be between 3500 - 5000 words
  • Use clear and structured language
  • Use of abbreviations is not recommended unless these are generally understood abbreviations
  • Articles should address a particular question and research problem
  • Articles should identify the methodology through which findings were obtained
  • Articles should include an assessment of the validity and reliability of findings
